Heeia Kea Pier

July 6, 2011

Every once in a while we discover something that is truly off the beaten path. The Heeia Kea Pier is no exception, at least in my opinion. Out on the end of this pier on Kaneohe Bay sits a small general store and deli. It doesn’t look like much and if you don’t know about it you might never find it.

We had heard about it through the folks at Town. Mark Noguchi, the new chef and proprietor at the pier, recently left Town to takeover the General Store and Deli. We were sad to see him leave but were excited by the prospect of a new favorite spot on the Windward side.

After hearing stories from friends who had made the trek I was determined to try it myself. This past Sunday was the day, and we were not alone. In a true testament to Mark and his team and the magic of word of mouth the pier was packed. Some were headed to the sandbar but most were there for the food. We ordered inside and grabbed a free seat.

It was busy, but our food came out fast. First up was this monster burger – I have no idea what it’s called except delicious. I wish I had something for scale, this thing was  bigger than my head!

This burger defies description

Next was the super yummy poke bowl with tomatoes and onions and then the delectable teri-steak flat bread. I was getting full but was trying to pace myself, those were just our starters.

Last out was the surf n turf. A healthy serving of rice topped with Kalua Pork, pickled cucumbers and tomato vinaigrette with grilled ahi and a side of the best mac salad I’ve ever had.

Our eyes were clearly bigger than our stomachs, but everything was so good I couldn’t stop eating. The fish was so fresh they were cleaning it when we first arrived—which is one of the best things about this place. All the food is fresh and locally sourced from the produce grown nearby to the fish that’s caught in the bay. If you live on that side of the island the Pier is a must and if you don’t live on that side of the island the trip is a must. Nothing beats eating fresh food out on the bay with the Koolaus behind you. Thank you Mark for such amazing food and a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to come back.
